Lesson 1 Anh Lộc taught tones & sounds. O, OA, OE, GI, CH, TR, NG, KH (worksheet)
Lesson 2 Anh Bảo taught the students a fun, new educational exercise for remembering the 100 words – Juggling! (worksheet) Traditional teaching methods generally use only 2 senses - sight & sound. Using our senses stimulates the brain, the more our brain is stimulated the more we will remember, hence we need to use more of our senses for learning then just sight and sound. Juggling will introduce another sense to the learning process and will help us remember the things we are learning. Everyone received a set of three silk scarves. They then had a demonstration of juggling to this audio recording. Then everyone got up & started juggling. Practice juggling at home with English words at first then either introduce Vietnamese words or use the audio recording. The idea is that you will focus on juggling and the Vietnamese words will become the secondary focus. This sounds a little counterproductive, but really, we don’t focus on the words we know in English, they are simply there to be used, stored in our brains. We want to achieve the same with Vietnamese, rather than thinking too much about the words, they will just naturally be there. Juggling can help us do that (not to mention it's a fun party trick!)
Lesson 3 Anh Bảo explained the value of Personal Phrase books. Phrase books bought from a shop are often pretty useless. They have phrases like "I have made my reservation" and "see the magic monkey in the tree". Not phrases we would generally use in the ministry! We need a phrase book we can use in our ministry & because people differ in what they would like to say, even in the same situations, it is very beneficial to have your own personal phrase book.
Anh Long asked the students what kind of questions they would like to be able to ask. Some examples were: What have you been doing today? (Hôm nay anh/chị làm gì?) It's nice to meet you. (Rất vui được gặp anh/chị) What do you do for work? (Anh/chị làm việc gì?) I am learning Vietnamese (Tôi đang học tiếng Việt)
Some other questions that are useful: Do you have any children? (Anh/Chị có con chưa?) Are you married? (Anh/Chị lập gia đình chưa?) Do you have a Bible? (Anh/Chị có Kinh Thánh không?) Would you like to study the Bible? (Anh/Chị muốn học Kinh Thánh không?)
Students were then given personal phrase book handouts. The first is an explanation of why making your own phrase book is so useful, and how to make a phrase book. The 2nd sheet was to help the students start their own phrase books.
Lesson 4 Anh Lộc taught tones & sounds. (worksheet) OI, OAN, OANG, OANH, T, NH. Anh Loc explained the subtle differences between: OA, AO & also OE, EO. The class split into smaller groups & practised with the instructors.
Lesson 5 Anh Long taught us more about “HOW” (worksheet) Bao Xa? (How far?) Bao Lâu? (How long is the time period) The class wrote some of their own sentences using “bao xa” & “bao lâu” & then some students shared them with the class. Bằng cách nào? Bằng gì? (By what means?) Có bao nhiêu? (How many?/How much?) (Note the additional information, not mentioned in class at the bottom of the worksheet) Students were asked to make some of the their own sentences as additional homework.
We then enjoyed an encouraging Talk from our Circuit Overseer, anh Rod (here are some notes)
Lesson 6 - Field Service. There was no new presentation this week, instead anh Bảo & anh Long demonstrated some potential conversation stoppers & possible responses. (worksheet) Here are 2 extras: Tôi không có thì giờ/thời gian (I don’t have time) Thờ ông bà (Ancestor worship) Class split then into smaller groups with instructors & had some more fun with scarves with some additional words from the worksheet (attitude/conduct).
Homework - as per (sheet) plus additonal “HOW” homework given by anh Long during his lesson.
