Lesson 1 - Reading & Pronunciation
This weeks class started off with the students in two smaller groups randomly reading from the My Book fo Bible Stories, Chapter 1. The instructor would then read the same sentence and allow the student to repeat and refine their tones and pronunciation. A recording of Chapter 1 can be found here: http://db.tt/lEsQUk
Lesson 2 - Theocratic Words & Bible Characters
Using the following worksheet the students matched up the Vietnamese names with the ones on their worksheets. Many were noted to be very similar to the English names, yet some quite different. Following this, a sheet with some Theocratic vocabulary was handed out. A recording of the Vietnamese words can be found here: http://db.tt/lEsQUk
Lesson 3 – 100 words and word association
How many words, in any language, do you need to know to be fluent? We discovered, 800. How many will enable you to be 50% fluent? 100. The class received a handout with these 100 words. Not just any 100 words will make you 50% fluent, they need to be the right 100 words. A recording of all these words is available here: http://db.tt/oe8fgr (Look carefully at the recordings, there is also a female voice for you females to listen to if you prefer).
We also introduced a new accelerated language learning tool: WORD ASSOCIATION! The sheet we looked at together helped us to see exactly how it works. This is a tool all students were strongly encouraged to put to good use, especially when learning these 100 important words.
Flashcards(another accelerated language learning method): http://quizlet.com/2546497/most-often-used-130-words-flash-cards/
(Note: if you took the time to count the words, there are actually 130 on this sheet. In Vietnamese there are a number of "extra" ones due to the extra words for you/me/I/us etc)
Lesson 4 – Tones & Pronunciation: t,th,ng nh,ư,ươ, etc
This lesson was a discussion of the following handout: Week 5 - Tones and Pronunciation. You're not expected to remember this all at once, but this sheet had a number of useful tips and explanations when comparing English to Vietnamese.
Lesson 5 - ULG: Time with muscle memory.
Another aid to accelerated language learning was discussed in this section. Muscle memory. Our muscles help with memory retention and learning. If we can use our muscles as we learn/say words we're more likely to remember then. The class spilt into two groups and using the sheet Week 5 - ULG, Time came up with gestures that involved their muscles for words such as hôm nay (today), tôi (me/I) etc etc. We then also showed how this could be done using the field service presentation from last week.
Homework sheet was handed out and explained.
Our lesson then concluded with a talk from a visitor. You can read the notes we took from Anh Quang Linh here. There were some excellent reminders, it's worth printing out and saving this for when you're feeling overwhelmed, or wondering how you'll ever get on top of your language learning.

Chị Lưu-Ly was missing for most of the class so no photo's and finer touches were added as a result. She did however, with the help of a few others put together an amazing lunch we all enjoyed!
